WCW General Assembly Faroe Islands Sept. 2002
Whaling Flensing Workshop
Klaksvík – 28 September 2002
In conjunction with the World Council of Whalers General Assembly in the Faroe
Islands, the Pilot Whalers Association is organising a special whaling workshop
on Saturday, September 28 in the town of Klaksvík on the northern island
of Borðoy.
The workshop will show visiting participants what happens to whales in the Faroes after a whale drive. Using complete whale carcasses that have been put aside for the purpose from recent catches this year, local whalers will demonstrate how the whales are measured, valued and flensed, how the shares are divided and collected in the local community, and how the meat and blubber is prepared and stored for use.
Prior to the flensing, Faroese veterinary and biological experts will explain
the technicalities of killing methods in the whale drive and sampling procedures
for scientific research.
Whale Cuisine Banquet
Müllers Pakkhús, Tórshavn - 27 September 2002
Hosted by the Faroese Pilot Whalers Association
in cooperation with Hotel Hafnia
Chefs from Japan, Greenland and Saint Lucia in the Caribbean join forces and skills with Faroese and Icelandic chefs from Hotel Hafnia in Tórshavn to prepare a unique culinary experience for the guests of the World Council of Whalers General Assembly Banquet, hosted by the Faroese Pilot Whalers Association. This event is the first of its kind to bring together the cuisines of four distinct regions of the world where whales have long been – and still are - an important part of the food culture.
The banquet for c. 130 guests will be buffet-style, held in the historical dockside setting of Müllers Pakkhús in Tórshavn, the 100 year-old former storehouse now owned by the Tórshavn City Council and recently renovated as a venue for cultural events.
